Great Plains State
Park, Oklahoma
Located
near Mountain Park,
Great Plains State
Park is
appropriately named,
and we learned
quickly that the
wind really does
sweep across the
plains in southwest
Oklahoma.
The
park has a neat
Native American
history with several
tribes located in
the area throughout
history. Situated
between two of our
favorite
southwestern
locations,
Quartz Mountain
Resort Park, and
the
Wichita Mountains
Wildlife Refuge,
Great Plains is a
welcome stop in
between.
Lake
Tom Steed in the
park has nice
fishing, and adds to
the relaxing feel of
this quiet park. The
park office was very
friendly to visit
with and we were
told the park is
usually not crowded.
Great Plains State
Park is surrounded
by the
Mountain park
Wildlife Management
Area.
Great
Plains Country
,as the area is
affectionately
known, has a nice
website and you can
order brochures
directly from them.
Located
about 35 miles to
the east, the
Wichita Mountains
Wildlife Refuge
is an absolute can't
miss while in the
area; we really
enjoyed the
visitor center
and drive up
Mt.
Scott . The
Buffalo and
Long Horn Steers
roam freely in the
refuge and are very
exciting to watch.
Prairie Dog town
inside the refuge is
a fun site to see,
our son really liked
the little furry
guys. The
Holy City of the
Wichita's was
also a fun site to
see while in the
Refuge.
